Stryker Hip Replacement Recall Settlement Update
In a prior post we reported about the Stryker Orthopedics recall for their artificial hip implant models – Rejuvenate and ABG II. Both of these implants were recalled because if they came in contact with internal pieces they could release heavy metals into the surrounding tissue and blood stream and result in the ultimate failure of the hip implant.
On November 3, 2014, a verdict against Stryker Corporation was announced. It stated that patients who required revision surgery to remove and replace the Rejuvenate or ABG II hip systems by November 3, 2014 were entitled to a base payment of $300,000. This base payment would be subject to certain deductions.
Some patients may be eligible for more than the base award if they experienced infections or other medical complications as a result of the revision surgery. Some examples of these complications, include but are not limited to, osteotomies during revision, re-revisions or other post-revision surgeries. Stryker’s liability is not capped. It is expected that total amount of payments under the settlement will far exceed $1 billion dollars.
