The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated earlier this month that nSpired Natural Foods Inc. has voluntarily recalled Arrowhead Mills Peanut Butters, MaraNatha Almond Butters and Peanut Butters and other private label nut butters sold under the Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Kroger and Safeway brands because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The risk was brought to the company’s attention by the FDA after routine testing discovered a possible link to four people who got sick with Salmonella after eating these products.
A complete list of products involved in the recall can be found on FDA.gov. The products were sold in the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Dominican Republic and on the Internet and were packaged in glass and plastic jars.nSpired Natural Foods Inc. is asking all retailers to remove any inventory included in the recall from their shelves and warehouses and they urge consumers to throw away any of the recalled containers of nut butters. For a refund or replacement contact the company directly at 1-800-937-7008 or 1-800-937-7008 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. There’s no need to return the item to the place of purchase.
Salmonella Symptoms
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2012 report, Salmonella was the number one cause of food poisoning. For people with a healthy immune system who digest food contaminated with Salmonella they may experience several symptoms, like: diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, vomiting, chills, headache and muscle pains within 12 to 72 hours. These symptoms can last four days up to a week and often go away without medical treatment.
But for children, the elderly and people with compromised immune symptoms the results can be life threatening if the Salmonella infection spreads to the bloodstream and is not treated quickly with antibiotics.
