After a car accident, you’ll most likely want to focus on healing from your injuries and getting your life back together. However, it’s important to also focus on the information and evidence that will strengthen your case should you decide to pursue a personal injury claim. So even if it seems like the accident was ages ago, don’t throw away that evidence just yet.
Here’s what you should plan to keep until your case has been settled and/or your lawyer gives you the “okay” to get rid of it.
- Photos of any Physical Evidence. This includes damage to your vehicle, road conditions at the time of the accident, physical injuries, and posted signs in the area.
- Witness Statements. Whether they are recorded or written, it’s smart to hang onto these statements and the contact information of each witness to the accident.
- Official Records. This means police reports, medical records, and correspondence with the insurance company, or communication with others involved in the accident.
- The Product or Part. If you were injured by a product or part you believe to have been defective, store it in a safe place away from children or other people who may try to use it.
- A Journal or Notes. If you took notes about your accident, your condition, or any other information that may be of use in a personal injury case, you should store them in a safe place.
Having this type of information on hand can help you and your personal injury law firm Fort Lauderdale better prepare a personal injury case. It may also help if something comes up with your case down the line and you need to refer back to older information. If you discard evidence, you may be unable to refer back to important information, which may end up jeopardizing your case.
