Broward County Transit Bus Accident: Mother Demands Justice For Her Son's Death

The family of a 20-year-old bicyclist killed in a collision in a Broward Transit bus accident is still seeking justice even after a year and a half. Nestor Sivada’s mother finds it difficult to watch the surveillance video of the incident without breaking down. The footage reveals the bus driver, aged 70, looking left while making a right turn at the intersection of 84th Ave. and Broward Blvd. in Plantation on November 18th, 2021. Sivada can be seen starting to cross the street with his bike when the bus accident happened. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Carmen Guerrero, his mother, expressed their deep longing for him and their belief in the American justice system, which is why they continue to pursue justice.

In the traffic homicide report by the Plantation Police Department, the bus driver mentioned “heavy traffic” and “poor visibility” as reasons in his statement to the police.

However, Guerrero’s attorney argues that the surveillance video clearly contradicts the bus driver’s claim. He states, “You can see Nestor on the video. So, visibility wasn’t an issue. We know the weather wasn’t a problem. There was no fog. If he looked, he would have seen him.” Guerrero’s attorney also points out that the county has never apologized or acknowledged the driver’s responsibility for the incident. The family had to rely on assistance from a local church to cover funeral expenses, as no payment was made by the county. Broward County officials declined to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings. The family is seeking damages of up to $300,000. As per the county’s internal investigation, the bus driver involved was terminated from his position.
